GENERAL RADIATION SAFETY

GENERAL RADIATION SAFETY

DESCRIPTION
Radioactive material and x-ray machines are safely used in a wide variety of industries. Attending a standard radiation safety course may assist participants meet their licensing or registration requirements with their relevant regulatory authorities. The courses are also highly valuable to those wanting to improve their knowledge on radiation protection principles and practices.
A wide range of industrial, academic and medical users attend this course including those from applications such as Biomedical, Industrial Gauge, Portable Gauge, Irradiation Facilities, X-ray Devices, Biotech, Security Screening, Uranium Mining, and many more. This 2-day course is designed for those with little or no knowledge of radiation to handle various radioactive materials and/or irradiating apparatus safely at work

OBJECTIVES
Course participants will acquire knowledge to exercise safe handling of radioactive materials and/or irradiating apparatus during the course of their work.

OUTLINE
·         Basic atomic and nuclear theory, including atomic and nuclear structures
·         Radioactivity, properties of gamma and other particulate emissions
·         Quantities and units: radioactivity, half-life, dose and dose rate, energy
·         Production of x-rays: atomic and bremstrahlung
·         Interaction of radiation with matter, ionisation, excitation, photoelectric effect, Compton Scattering, pair production
·         Biological effects of radiation
·         Principles of radiation protection
·         Shielding calculations, calculate dose from dose-rate, inverse square law
·         Radiation instruments for detection and measurement  – personal dosimeter, survey meters, area monitors
·         Legislation, dose limits, personal monitoring, responsibilities of the licensee
·         Labeling of radiation areas and radiation sources, storage of radioactive sources, source movement records, transportation of sources.
·         Accidents. Emergency Procedures. Contingency plans

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
Company radiation safety officers who are responsible for the safe use and transport of radioactive sources or the use of x-ray machines, and workers who need to handle radioactive materials and irradiating apparatus. Besides providing basic knowledge on radiation protection, this course also prepares participants for the L5/L6 (non-NDT work) licence qualifying test
